Taxation States - Andhra Pradesh AP Textile traders to down shutters tomorrow Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 20 The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Textile Associations will down shutters again on March 22 and take out a "Chalo Assembly" rally to draw Government attention on the need to do away with VAT on `made-ups'. Speaking to newspersons, the federation President, Mr Ammanabolu Vijay Kumar, and the General Secretary, Mr Soma Dayanand, said it was regrettable that despite several representations and protests by the textile traders and a State-wide bandh and relay hunger strikes, the Government has refused to withdraw the Government Order (GO) No. 1564 that imposed VAT on `made-ups'. They contended that Andhra Pradesh was the only State with such a provision. Mr Vijay Kumar said that the livelihood of lakhs of people, predominantly women, in several parts of the State, including over a lakh working on `zardosi' in the old city of Hyderabad alone, would be impacted. The revenues that Government expected out of taxing `made-up' articles including bedsheets, blankets, curtains, crochet laces, pillow covers, towels, zari, and embroidered items, would not in any way be substantial. On the other hand, it would probably lead to a decline in their popularity if prices went up, he said. A delegation of district- and State-level office-bearers of the federation would submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The federation also said that if the State Government fails to respond to the "genuine concerns" of the textile trade, they would step up agitation till the Government withdraws VAT on textiles.
