Maruti sales up 15.7 pc in March

Maruti Udyog Ltd on Monday reported a 15.7 per cent increase in its total sales at 63,196 units in March compared to 54,613 units sold in the corresponding month last year.

For the year ending March 31, 2006, the company registered total sales of 5,61,822 units (including exports) against 5,36,301 units in the previous fiscal, recording a growth of 4.8 per cent. On the domestic front, the company clocked 5,27,038 units in sales for the fiscal year 2005-06, recording a growth of 8.1 per cent (4,87,402).

In March, the company sold a total of 61,141 vehicles in the domestic market, with its best-selling model Alto clocking 17,908 units, Wagon R 10,843 units and Swift 6,651 units.

During the year, Alto continued to be the country's highest selling model. Its sales grew by 25.7 per cent. In the A3 segment, Baleno recorded a 29.6 per cent growth and the combined sales of Baleno and Esteem grew by 7.8 per cent during 2005-06.

Maruti 800 on its part recorded a growth of 6.7 per cent, selling 10,937 units in the month.

Exports during March, however, continued to slide as they fell 47 per cent at 2,055 units against 3,920 units in the corresponding period last year. The company's exports have dipped 28.9 per cent for the year ending March 31, 2006, at 34,784 units against 48,899 units.
