NALSAR tops Asia Pacific in Jessup competition

A student team from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), University of Law, Hyderabad topped the Asia Pacific region and were ranked fourth in the world at the recently concluded Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington.
The Jessup Moot Court, this year attracted 556 teams from 89 countries. Of these 104 teams competed in the finals in Washington. The NALSAR Team comprised of Anuradha Agnihotri, Rohan Kaul and Raghav Shankar. The team won all their preliminary rounds beating teams from the US, Europe and South East Asia. In the Quarter Finals, they even pulled off the biggest upset of the Competition by beating the top seeded team and former world Champions, the University of Philippines. The team from Columbia Law School, USA were declared this year's World Champions.
The competition is based on a hypothetical problem that requires law students to respond with oral and written arguments before a court that simulates arguments before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands.
This year's problem raised issues involving bilateral investment treaties, state responsibility for the activities of public-private joint ventures, and the human rights of indigenous people. Mr Michael Peil, Executive Director of the International Law Students Association, the organisers of the competition, said the hypothetical issues in Jessup have serious implications in the real world of international law.
