SSI second quarter net at Rs 11.5 cr

Chennai , April 21

SSI Ltd has reported a net profit of Rs 11.53 crore for the second quarter of its financial year, ended March 2006, compared with a net loss of Rs 2.67 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year.

Profits came from `other income' of Rs 14.61 crore, which included Rs 12.71 crore from the sale of 18 lakh shares in Aptech Ltd. SSI Ltd had invested in Aptech in 2003.

Since the merger of SSI's education business with Aptech and its technology business with Scandent Solutions, SSI Ltd has been engaged in asset-based businesses in other areas.

The company has announced a project to develop 5,000 apartments in Perambur, Chennai.

A press release quotes the company's Chairman and CEO, Mr Kalpathi Suresh, as saying that the first phase of the project, comprising 500 apartments, would begin in the July-September quarter.

"We expect to roll out 1,000 apartments every year over the next five years," Mr Suresh said in the release.
