Announcements Dunlop reopens Sahagunj facility Our Bureau
Kolkata , April 21 Barely 10 days after the reopening of Ambattur facility in Tamil Nadu, the new management of Dunlop India on Friday reopened the company's oldest facility at Sahagunj in Hooghly district West Bengal to begin work on maintenance, refurbishment and modernisation before starting production. The Sahagunj facility has been closed since 1998 barring an 11-month period in 2000-2001. Incidentally, the re-opening has taken place a day before the Hooghly district goes to the Assembly polls on April 22. It may be mentioned that the Dunlop Sahagunj facility is a major factor impacting this year's Assembly election. This is because the facility has been the economic backbone of the locality for decades. Meanwhile, the Dunlop management has expressed its intention to bring both the Sahagunj and Ambattur facilities on stream on or before September 1, 2006. "The final production schedule, however, will depend on the progress of work and co-operation of the employees in each facility", Dunlop Chairman, Mr. Ruia, told Business Line. The plant is targeting an initial production of 40 tonnes per day to be stepped up to 130 tonnes per day in phases. The company has already entered into a pact with trade unions to absorb 1400 out of 2700 employees in the facility. The rest will be offered early retirement (ERS). The total outgo towards ERS, past wages, PF and other such workers liability is estimated to be Rs 43 crore.
