Avaya to focus on Web services

To use service-oriented architecture to enhance applications

Bangalore , April 27

Phone maker Avaya will focus on Web services and SOA (service-oriented architecture) this year in India.

The firm has aggressive plans (besides being the communication provider for FIFA World Cup 2006) to tap the $60-million IP telephony market in India (as of fiscal '04). Avaya's phones are used for global conference calls by major MNCs such as Texas Instruments and IBM.

IP phones re-route calls through the Internet, making them effectively cheaper compared to conventional telephone calls. While the quality is superior, the primary advantage of IP telephony is that companies can bring down their communication costs.

Avaya will use SOA to enhance applications of its communication products and services, said Mr Lawrence Byrd, Director, IP Telephony and Mobility, Avaya. The SOA method advocates the use of re-usable software components on a standardised interface.

With this method, parts of Avaya's products can now be used to enhance desktops, business applications and process flows for corporate users. Hence notification, alerts, telephony, event processing and logging parts would fit into business & communication task flows and will help desktop users communicate easily, said Mr Byrd.

Speaking to Business Line at the sidelines of its GlobalConnect seminar in the city recently, Mr Byrd also predicted the market would double this fiscal year compared to last year.
