Human Resources Demand for software architects seen rising Our Bureau
Bangalore , May 1 If programmers are the infantry of the IT empire, consultants and architects are being viewed as the cavalry. While software architects currently account for only around one per cent of the total IT manpower in India as against 10 per cent in the West, the demand for this new breed of professionals is set to soar, according to software architecture product firm iCMG. Organisations that use software frameworks could reduce costs of over $500 million. Around 80 per cent of the IT budget is spent on maintenance. This can be reduced by redesigning software architecture. "It will increase the opportunities to collaborate with partners across multiple market segments and geographical boundaries," added Mr Sunil Dutt Jha, Chief Executive Officer, iCMG. iCMG is a provider of software tools, solutions and services on software architecture. The company's product, K2 Component Server, is an SOA-based application server. SOA (service oriented architecture) is a method of tuning IT solutions to suit business needs.
Backbone of software
A number of Indian IT players, according to Mr Jha and Mr M.S. Udaya Ravi, Partner Manager, Compuware, had realised the importance of software architects and are setting up consulting arms. Software architecting is a layer of abstraction that shrouds an organisation's IT system. It is the skeleton of a software system, a framework that has to be designed to be able to scale for future business requirements. This framework involves components (modules, bits of code) of the software system, protocols that allow interaction between those components, properties such as throughput and latency, and life-cycle issues (such as maintainability, extent of reuse, and platform independence). So, a well-defined software architecture is at the heart of a stable software solution.
Architecture summit
The company, in association with Compuware, is holding a Software Architecture Summit this month. It will feature experts from the US, the UK, Australia, Malaysia and India. Around 500 architects from 100 firms of the likes of HP, Microsoft, Reliance Industries and NSE-IT will attend the summit. The conference would focus on enterprise and software architecture as a speciality with the topics being Enterprise architecture frameworks, model-driven architecture, component-based product line and service-oriented architecture. These systems not only reduce cost but also ensure system longevity and enhance productivity.
