The Government is still undecided on whether to go in for legislation or adopt a policy resolution for the proposed special economic regions (SERs) in the country, according to Dr Ajay Dua, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
Speaking at an Assocham meeting here, Dr Dua pointed out that SERs as a concept was still at a nascent stage and further deliberations would be required within the government.
Asked whether industry can expect labour law flexibility in the special economic zones, Dr Dua said that there was enough flexibility in the SEZ Act 2005 to allow States to take positions on the issue.
"It is entirely for the States to decide where SEZ will be located and to look at what relaxation in labour laws can be allowed," Dr Dua said.
He pointed out that the initial draft of the SEZ law of last year talked about labour law flexibility, but was finally withdrawn before the passage of the law last year.
