Mumbai , May 13

Cord-blood banking firm LifeCell expects to commence clinical research in July, when its exclusive stem-cell transplant centre becomes operational in Chennai, said Mr S. Abhaya Kumar, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Cryo-cell Private Ltd.

Having tied-up recently with Saneron CCell, a stem cell research company, Mr Kumar said research would be kicked-off in segments such as stroke and spinal cord injuries in July.

The studies would be phase IIa trials, where targeted trials are done on a larger sample size of people with the illness. Regulatory clearances have been received, he said. LifeCell's Chennai stem-cell transplant centre is an estimated Rs 15-crore project, he added.

Second unit

The company also has plans for a second banking facility in Mumbai, scheduled to be operational by end 2007.

Mr Kumar told Business Line that the company has been talking with a clutch of hospitals in Mumbai towards jointly opening the centre. The estimated project cost is Rs 5 crore.

Meanwhile, LifeCell is also introducing information kiosks across 400 retail outlets in Mumbai and 40 hospitals across India. The company has earmarked Rs 1 crore towards this initiative.
