`Protests over Tata Motors project a small incident'

Kolkata , May 27

The West Bengal Minister for Commerce & Industries, Public Enterprises & Industrial Reconstruction, Mr Nirupam Sen, said that the steam let off by local people at Singur, the site of Tata Motors' small car project, was a small incident and should not be blown out of proportion. He was talking to newspersons here on Friday onthe sidelines of an industry interactive session with a visiting Chinese trade delegation

Suggesting that the project was on course, Mr Sen said that perhaps adequate homework was not done owing to elections and the project announcement soon thereafter. Clarifying that the compensation package was being worked out, he said the difficulties of the marginal farmers entirely dependent on the land for livelihood would not be ignored. "We have assured jobs to at least one member of such displaced family."

Asked exactly how many would be displaced from the farm land because of the project, he said this had not yet been worked out. Citing the example of Haldia, he said despite initial scepticism, today the place has become a large industrial hub providing jobs to many people. The Tata Motors project too would eventually become highly beneficial for people of the region.
