Internet Hughes plans 1,000 broadband kiosks this year Thomas K. Thomas
New Delhi , May 30 US-based communication firm Hughes Communication will roll out 1,000 broadband kiosks across the country this year. The broadband kiosks will be linked using satellite technology and will offer high speed Internet at the rate of 25 paise a minute. Apart from Internet, the kiosks will also offer telephony services using the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. The Hughes kiosks are expected to give tough competition to the likes of Sify and Reliance, which have an extensive network of Internet cafes. Speaking to Business Line, Mr Pranav Roach, President, Hughes Network (India), said "The kiosks will offer data and voice solutions at tariffs that will be among the lowest in the market." The company already has 250 such kiosks across 95 towns in the country. The company has also changed its name from Hughes Escorts Communications Ltd (HECL) to Hughes Communications India Ltd. This comes after Hughes recently got the permission from the Government to increase its stake in the company to 74 per cent. The remaining 26 per cent will be with the Nandas promoted Escorts Group. "We are in the process of acquiring part of the Escort's stake. It should be finalised soon," said Mr Roach.
