Mangalore , May 31

, Considering the increase in volume of passenger and freight traffic, the Hubli-headquartered South Western Railway (SWR) zone has initiated various measures to improve infrastructure facilities at some important locations.

These measures include the remodelling of some important stations in the zone and more facilities for freight handling.

Mr T.N. Perti, SWR General Manager, told Business Line that new work on extension of platforms to 24-coach length has been sanctioned in 11 important stations in the zone. Of them, seven are in Mysore division. (Hubli, Bangalore and Mysore divisions come under SWR zone.)

Medium platforms

Work is in progress for providing medium platforms at 14 stations in the zone. This will be executed in the current financial year.

The three premium stations in Bangalore — Bangalore City, Bangalore Cantonment, and Yeshwanthpur — contribute a major chunk to the passenger traffic of SWR. While a second entry to the Bangalore City station is being developed, the Yeshwanthpur station is being remodelled. "We are also planning additional facilities at Bangalore Cantonment," he said.

Steps have been initiated to increase the number of platforms at the Hubli station. "We have been able to shift the location of goods shed at Hubli to a 100-acre land at Navalur, near Hubli. Goods shed has been moved to pave way for the passenger platforms," he said.

Apart from this, stations such as Vasco-da-Gama, Belgaum, Davangere, Shimoga Town and Haveri are being redesigned.

The zone is building a wagon maintenance depot at Hospet in Bellary district and a track machines maintenance depot at Yeshwanthpur in Bangalore.

Mr Perti said electronic in-motion weighbridges have been installed at TB Dam, Ginigera, Dharwad and Bannihatti.

Three more such weighbridges are in various stages of installation at Bellary Cantt, Saslu and Banasandra.
