Plans investments worth Rs 70 cr

Kolkata , June 6

Kolkata-based R.P. Infosystems Ltd, manufacturer of the Chirag brand of computers, has firmed up plans to set up its second manufacturing facility in Meghalaya in a joint venture with the Government of Meghalaya.

While R.P. Infosystems would hold 80 per cent of the equity stake in the proposed venture, the rest would be held by the Meghalaya Government, Mr Kaustuv Roy, Chairman of the R.P. Group of companies, told Business Line.

Mr Roy said the setting up of the personal computer manufacturing facility in Barappani, Meghalaya, would entail an investment of Rs 70 crore. This sum would be generated from the group's internal accruals. Computers manufactured at Barappani would be marketed in all the North-Eastern States under the Chirag brand. The Government of Meghalaya would provide the land and allied infrastructure required for the project, which is expected to become operational by next month.According to him, a 40 per cent subsidy on electricity charges and exemption from sales tax, excise and income tax for a period of 10 years are factors that weighed heavily in favour of Meghalaya as a preferred destination.Mr Roy said Chirag computers are at present manufactured at the company's facility located in Howrah district. The Howrah facility has a capacity to manufacture 11,000 desktop computers per month
