Alliances & Joint Ventures States - Karnataka Reliance, Intel tie-up to offer Net service Our Bureau
Bangalore , June 13 Reliance Communications announced on Tuesday a tie-up with chipmaker Intel for providing instant Internet connectivity to 11 cities and towns in Karnataka. Both companies are keen to tap the fast growing personal computer segment in tier three and four towns. The programme would be rolled out nationally in the next two months, said Mr Inder Bajaj, Head, Post Paid Business, Reliance Communications. He told reporters here that Internet connectivity in smaller towns lagged due to poor networks and high access costs. Mr Bajaj said the tie-up would enable Reliance Communications to bundle the service to users of Intel chip-based PCs and portable computers. Reliance Communications has appointed genuine Intel dealers across the 11 towns to market the new offering, he added. The dealers would provide PC buyers Internet-enabled Reliance fixed wireless phones. The programme covers Belgaum, Bellary, Bhatkal, Chitradurga, Davangere, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Hospet, Mandya, Shimoga and Karwar. Reliance Communications has a subscriber base of 1.2 million in Karnataka, of which 7,000 are data card users. Mr John McClure, Managing Director, Sales and Marketing (South Asia), Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd, said the tie-up with Reliance would help target the small business segment, which was eager to get Net connectivity for improved business efficiency. The programme would also cover the consumer segment and schools.
