Kerala experiences heavy rains

Thiruvananthapuram , June 20

A slowly reviving monsoon pulse dumped heavy precursor rains over many parts of Kerala during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Cherthala (15 cm) and Kasaragod (12 cm) topped the list with very heavy rainfall. A forecast by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) said favourable conditions were developing for revival of monsoon over the southern peninsula within the next 24-36 hours.

Predictions indicate that the system will make a slow progress towards north, Mr J.V. Singh of the NCMRWF told Business Line. The upper level easterly wind regime has advanced noticeably into the north and is now discernible over the Chennai latitude, although cruising at less than optimum speeds.

The south-westerly winds over Arabian Sea responsible for ferrying in the pulse have also made some progress during the last 24 hours. They have worked up speeds, which Mr Singh said were more or less the optimum.

A cluster of clouds has built along the southwest coast in anticipation of the arrival of the pulse. The east-west shear zone of monsoon turbulence is also in tact. The reviving monsoon is seen as breaking in over the northeast almost at the same time.

Graphics put out by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) showed the pulse making a splash over the peninsula by Friday with a pronounced southerly bias. Activity will shift gradually to the north, peaking with the North Gujarat coast possibly witnessing the birth of a cyclone by June 27 (Tuesday next).

Most of the peninsula will have been covered by then, with the buzz spilling into the east to the northwest part of the Bay. Mr Jim Andrews of the US-based AccuWeather also saw possibility of a cyclone being spun off by the reviving monsoon but was not able to confirm to which side of the peninsula.
