Mangalore, June 20

The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to initiate steps to operate international flights from Mangalore. In a letter to Dr Singh - copies of which were released to the press here on Tuesday - Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, KCCI President, said the 50-year-old Mangalore airport has been upgraded for the operation of international flights.

The second runway built for this purpose is awaiting formal inauguration. The letter requested that Dr Singh declare the airport open for international flights during his visit to Mangalore on June 23.
