High speed wireless data transfer

Bangalore , June 21

Streaming of videos, from camcorder to TV, is going to be a `killer' application for ultra wide band (UWB), a wireless data transfer method.

Already predicted by various analysts as the next big thing to hit wireless homes and home entertainment domain, UWB will help device makers leverage high-speed wireless transfer of data.

With a range of 10 metres, UWB lets a user sit along with a family on the sofa, and at the push of a button, stream a home video taken on the camcorder to the TV. With data speeds of 480 mbps, this wireless technology will drastically cut down on waiting time.

More to come

Another application of UWB is `fast synch'. "This will help the busy executive synchronise contacts on a PDA and laptop within seconds," said Mr Glen Collinson, Co-Founder, CSR Plc, a UK-based specialist firm in wireless technologies such as BlueTooth and WiFi.

UWB-enabled printers will be the first to hit the market, said Mr Collinson. USB dongles with UWB capability for printers and PCs will be available by the second half of this year. Digital TVs, cars, gaming consoles, mp3 players and cellular handsets will follow.

From a camera-phone or digicam, high-resolution photos can be sent within seconds to a nearby printer using UWB. This short-range technology will piggyback on the success of BlueTooth. In 2008, 100 million UWB units will be sold, according to a study by IMS.
