M&M launches Champion Alfa in TN

Our Bureau

Chennai , July 5

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has launched `Champion Alfa', a 0.5-tonne three-wheeler cargo vehicle in Tamil Nadu. This is a smaller load variant of M&M's 0.75-tonne Champion.

The diesel engine vehicle features air-cooled direct injection, bigger cabin space and long wheel drive, and comes in five colours.

"We plan to introduce at least 3-4 variants of the Alfa this year," said Mr Jacob Varghese, Zonal Head, South, Automotive Sector, M&M. These include utility models such as bottle carrier, egg carrier, cylinder carrier and delivery van.

Sales target

Currently 100 vehicles have been booked in Tamil Nadu and the company expects sales of around 350 units per month in the future.

Alfa was launched in six States last year and around 9,000 vehicles have been sold so far. "We plan to capture 50 per cent of the 0.5-tonne three-wheeler market in a year," said Mr Varghese.

Alfa and Champion are manufactured at M&M's Zahirabad factory. If demand rises the Haridwar plant will also manufacture them, Mr Varghese said.

M&M is likely to launch a four-wheel drive in the cargo carrier segment this year, said Mr Varghese. He did not give any other details.
