Cars Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Auto exports rise 27.32 pc in Q1 Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 15 Passenger carmakers exported about 10,000 more passenger cars in the first quarter of the fiscal, continuing the double-digit growth trot that the segment has been witnessing. In fact, this figure is set to go up further as automakers such as Nissan and Suzuki have indicated plans to roll out export-led models from India in the near future. The bulk of exports in this category last quarter were driven by Hyundai Motor India, which exports its compact car model Santro to several markets, including Europe. It accounted for 30,892 units of the total passenger car exports of 49,132 units in the period. Maruti was the second largest exporter at 7,544 units. Further at 33,234 units, most of the cars exported were in the compact car category. Overall automobile exports registered 27.32 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2006-07 over the same period last year, with the bulk of the growth driven by the motorcycle segment. Almost 42,000 more motorcycles were sold in the first quarter of the year against the same period last year. According to industry data, 1,34,344 bikes were exported in the quarter over 92,462 units in the year ago period, a jump of 45 per cent. Bajaj Auto was by far the largest exporter with overseas sales of 70,711 units, followed by Hero Honda at 29,115 units and TVS at 18,960 units. The main destination for bike exports is the neighbouring countries along with other South East Asian nations.
