Ennore Foundries setting up `pattern and tool shop'

To use software to simulate flow of metal in a mould

Chennai , Aug. 7

Ennore Foundries Ltd has decided to enlarge the scope of its ongoing expansion project by adding a `pattern and tool shop', the company's Managing Director, Mr V. Mahadevan, told Business Line.

The new facility will add Rs 15 crore to the estimated project cost of Rs 135 crore.

The company is also bringing in software that would simulate the flow of metal in a mould.

The new facilities will help produce moulds and cores better and a lot quicker, Mr Mahadevan said. (Cores are pieces, made of hardened sand, which are placed into moulds to form internal cavities to pour molten metal into.)

The new additions to the project are significant because after Ennore Foundries' new unit at Sriperumbudur comes up, the company will have three production centres — Sriperumbudur, Ennore and Hyderabad (Ductron division).

The pattern and tool shop and the design centre that uses the simulation software would cater to the needs of all the three production centres, Mr Mahadevan noted.

While the new unit, with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes a year, is coming up at a cost of Rs 150 crore, the other two units are also expanding. Ennore Foundries is spending Rs 45 crore on raising the capacity of the Ennore unit from 48,000 tonnes to 55,000 tonnes. It is spending another Rs 20 crore in enhancing Ductron's capacity from 24,000 tonnes to 36,000 tonnes.

Further, the company is looking to acquire another 40 acres of land at Sriperumbudur to make room for future expansion.

With all this, Ennore Foundries will be the largest foundry in India.

As much as 40 per cent of the capacity of the new unit is to be dedicated for exports. The `pattern and tool shop and design centre' will develop to be the heart of the company's operations.

Meanwhile, Ennore Foundries is also in the process of tying up with a wind energy developer to supply power for the new unit.

The unit would need about 50 lakh units a month, which is roughly the production of 25 MW of windmills.

An agreement is likely with Alfin Wind Energy, a subsidiary of IndusInd Bank, an associate unit of Ennore Foundries.
