TRAI calls industry meet on 3G

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 16

In a bid to iron out differences on third generation (3G) mobile services, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has called for a joint industry meeting on August 18. The Representatives of the Cellular Operators Association of India and the Association of Unified Telecom Services Providers of India have been called to present their views on controversial issues such as entry fee for 3G services and allocation of spectrum in the 1900 Mhz band to CDMA operators.

The industry is sharply divided over these issues especially on spectrum. While the CDMA operators have demanded 3G spectrum in the 1900 Mhz band, COAI has been opposing it on the grounds that it will create interference with GSM services. TRAI has asked the CDMA operators and equipment vendors to prove that there will not be any interference. The TRAI Chairman, Mr Nripendra Misra, is also meeting the honchos of the various telecom companies separately to find a solution to the issue.
