Software parks to come up in 4 cities

Chennai , Aug. 23

The Tamil Nadu Government will bring out new policies to encourage development of the knowledge industries — information technology and biotechnology.

Addressing the Assembly on Wednesday, the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said that experts anticipate that the next phase of industrial revolution would be driven by biotechnology. The Government would soon come out with a new policy aimed at the development of biotechnology industry, which is expected to have an impact on human health and food security.

Also in the pipeline is a new policy for the development of information technology. An IT Task Force would also be established to attract investments from the IT companies, he said.

The policy would build on the experience and benefits of information technology to catalyse its growth further, he said.

Another software park along the lines of the Tidel Park in Taramani in the city would be established near the first facility.

The development of the information technology industry would also be replicated in the smaller cities and towns in the State.

The Government in partnership with the private sector and the Software Technologies Park of India would establish a software park in Coimbatore. Such facilities would also be set up in Madurai, Tiruchi, Salem and Tirunelveli, Mr Karunanidhi said.

The upgradation of the Old Mahabalipuram Road as an IT Expressway between Adyar and Siruseri (about 25 km from Chennai) at a cost of Rs 205 crore will be extended by 25 km up to Mahabalipuram, he said.

E-governance facilities available in urban centres will be provided in rural areas.

According to the policy note on IT Department, the e-governance facility to improve service delivery to the public will be expedited.

In the first phase, 12 mission mode departments have been selected. These include land records, commercial taxes, registration, agriculture, food and civil supplies, health, panchayats, education, treasuries, municipalities, transport and employment.
