Citizen groups protest against colas
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Aug. 23
Several citizen groups, parliamentarians and scientists on Wednesday called for a complete ban on sales and distribution of soft drinks manufactured by the two cola majors, Pepsi and Coca-Cola, from November 21-25.
The citizen groups, parliamentarians and scientists have charted a three-month protest programme throughout the country wherein they will go to schools and colleges in both villages and cities to educate people about the hazardous effects of soft drinks. The programme will also include a week- long complete blockade of soft drinks from the two companies in November. The groups also demanded the companies be more transparent and forthcoming about the additives and various other ingredients used in making soft drinks and to have these clearly mentioned on the bottles.
The groups said that soft drinks contain hazardous chemicals such as phosphoric acid, ethylene Gycol, caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, and carbon dioxide. "The pesticide issue is not the only issue," they said.
