Infrastructure Government - Policy Centre okays revised concession deal for Bangalore airport Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept 7 The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposed amendment to the concession agreement for the greenfield airport coming up in Bangalore. The proposed amendment, which has been necessitated by the increase in passengers and aircraft passing through the airport, would also see the project cost increase to Rs 1,930.29 crore from Rs 1,411.79 crore. Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) proposes to raise the additional debt from lenders. "Of the Rs 518.5 crore additional funds required, Rs 450 crore would come from lenders while the rest would come through advance security deposits received from third party service providers. The debt equity ratio of the project would change to 3.63:1 from the existing 2.25:1," official sources said. BIAL is a joint venture of Siemens Project Ventures, L&T, Zurich Airport and public sector partners AAI and KSIIDC.
Revised traffic numbers
The need for redesigning the airport was felt because there has been a significant increase in both aircraft movement and passenger traffic through Bangalore airport. "The revised traffic study showed that the traffic of 8.4 million passengers which the airport was projected to handle in 2020 would actually be achieved in 2010 itself. Similarly, the initial forecast of the airport handling 41,000 aircraft movement annually by 2010 has now been revised to 1.06 lakh aircraft movement annually," official sources said. BIAL has therefore redesigned the initial phase of the project by adopting the forecast traffic for 2015 for the terminal building capacity and 2010 for airside infrastructure. In the re-design the total built-up area of the passenger terminal building has been revised to 71,000 sq metres up from 55,850 sq metre. In addition, the apron area for aircraft parking has been increased to accommodate 36 Boeing-737 category aircraft. Besides, the taxiway length as well as the entry and exits to and from the runway have also been increased to accommodate increased aircraft movements.
