Government - Radio/TV
Fulsome praise

Dignitaries on visits abroad are known to make polite references to their hosts. But the text made available in New Delhi by the Press Information Bureau about Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's statement at a meeting with the Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, shows the Prime Minister profusely praising his host. The text is replete with such references as "in President Lula, we have a brother and a friend... we admire the leadership he has provided to the developing world... in him we have a world statesman... for me it has been a great honour and a privilege to have worked closely with him.'' And, finally, "I thank you Mr President for what you are.''

Scribes here are wondering whether the Prime Minister was really taken in by President Lula or was it his way of making up for the faus pax that Minister of State for Commerce, Jairam Ramesh, committed on the eve of the Prime Minister's Brazil visit when he belittled the India, Brazil, South Africa (IBSA) alliance in a newspaper interview. The Brazilians were reported to be mighty upset and wanted the Indian side to make amends.
