Madurai , Oct. 6

The country's first cellular base station antenna (CBSA) manufacturing plant was inaugurated at Vellaripatti on the Madurai-Melur Road, near here.

The unit is a joint venture between TVS Interconnect System Ltd (TVS ICS) of the TVS Group that offers optimised solutions to the telecom and enterprise networking segment and Argus Technologies, Australia, one of the leading antenna manufacturers in the world with a $60-billion turnover.

The unit initially proposes to roll out 25,000 antennas including tower and shelter per annum and scale up, based on market requirements with a focus on exports.

Hitherto, though the domestic market is huge, the country has been importing antennas from abroad and the initiative to manufacture locally will help to reduce the delivery time by 50 per cent besides cutting the costs in terms of freight charges, said the President, TVS ICS, Mr T.K. Basu, while addressing a media conference at the unit.

The plant is fitted with latest facilities to cater to the entire range of CBSAs supporting the GSM, CDMA and UMTS requirements.

It has the advantage of undertaking works related to upgradation, repair and maintenance of existing antennas at economical rates. The support of Thiagarajar College of Engineering has been enlisted through a MoU for testing external range facilities under TIFAC-CORE in wireless technologies.

Mr Basu further said that with the initial investment of about Rs 7 crore and a proposed investment of over Rs 50 crore in the next few years, the venture would emerge as a total solution provider for the out-door segment, gaining the number one status in marketing antennas within next three years in the country.

Mr John Bonello, Managing Director, Argus Technologies, the technical collaborator of the venture, who inaugurated the plant said the company's technical expertise combined with the marketing expertise of the TVS Group would take the venture to new heights.
