Coir Board asked to prepare detailed project report

Kochi , Oct. 12

The Union Government plans to provide financial support to install one lakh coir looms across the country over the next five years. .

Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, said at a press meet here on Thursday that the Government would think of extending financial assistance as 50 per cent subsidy amounting to Rs 100 crore for implementing the project.

The Coir Board has been asked to prepare a detailed project report in this regard, the Minister said, adding that a large part of the sector requires modernisation efforts urgently for the growth of the industry.

Besides, the Ministry would take up the infrastructure development of 24 coir clusters across the country and an investment of Rs 1 crore for each cluster would be made available, he said.

In a bid to restrict foreign trips by officials, the Minister said that the Government was also planning to organise buyer-seller meet in India. Towards this, an Indian international coir marketing festival will be held in October next year in Alappuzha for the promotion of coir. It will either be an annual or biennial event.

"We must stop sending delegation abroad. The Ministry is now de-emphasising foreign trips and emphasising buyer-seller meet in India for coir promotion," he said. The meet should project India as a major source for coir products.

Geo-textile Promotion

The rate of growth of coir exports is higher compared to other exports as it has gone up by 28 per cent in the last three years in dollar terms. However, domestic market also has to be looked into for the betterment of the sector, he said. As part of expanding to domestic market, the Commerce Ministry is also launching a major geo-textile promotion in association with the Surface Transport Ministry to improve the quality of roads.
