Security Expert panel on security may favour ranking of cos Priyanka Vyas
New Delhi , Oct. 12 The expert committee constituted by the Ministry of Information Technology to provide a security framework for Indian IT companies will bring out its report by mid-November. This would include a multi-dimensional framework to rate companies in the IT space by creating anchor institutions. For the final draft, the expert committee has sought recommendation from industry bodies such as Nasscom, premier education institutions and legal firms. It would also take in to account recommendations from outsourcing companies in the US, intellectual property rights experts, patent owners, software designers and network security specialists among others.
Employee issues
Senior officials from the IT Ministry told Business Line, "We are seeking the opinion of IITs, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) and Nasscom amongst others." They added that with instances of data theft, managing human resource was becoming a critical challenge and the report would seek to provide guidance to companies on employee issues. Sources said that the body to rank companies was likely to be named `Indian Trusted Security Framework', to which companies would subscribe. Taking a cue from the standards prescribed by the US-based University Carnegie Mellon for certifying IT firms on their `Capability Maturity Model' (CMM), the `Trusted Companies' initiatives would be an indigenous body to rank IT companies at different levels. When asked to comment on the development, the Nasscom President, Mr Kiran Karnik, said, "It is early to comment on the initiative. We would make a final announcement in the next few weeks. However, he acknowledged that the Government was very serious about implementing the programme."
