The Hindu Business Line : BHEL, Russian co to jointly upgrade UP power station

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has tied up with Russia's Power Machines to upgrade and modernise five generating units of the Obra Thermal Power Station in Uttar Pradesh. The tie-up could be extended to other units in the country.

"The tie-up involves supply of parts and components for the refurbishment programme for the station... If it works well, we could look at the possibility of extending the tie-up to other projects as well," BHEL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Ashok K. Puri, told Business Line.

Equipment supplies under the contract, signed last month, are scheduled to commence from late-2007 and is expected to be completed by mid-2008, according to Government sources.

Most of the units in the station use power equipment produced by BHEL based on the design by the Russian firm Leningrad Metal Works, which is operated by Power Machines.

Power Machines, which produces equipment for hydraulic, thermoelectric, gas and nuclear power plants, power transmission and distribution, as well as equipment for the transport sector, supplies its equipment to about 87 countries. German engineering giant Siemens has around 25 per cent stake in Power Machines.

With new opportunities coming up in the power sector, BHEL is already expanding its existing capabilities and has outlined plans to enhance its manufacturing capacity from 6,000 MW per annum at present to 10,000 MW, Mr Puri said.

He said BHEL has already taken necessary steps to cater to the likely demand for 800 MW thermal generating sets and is actively exploring opportunities arising from the proposed Ultra Mega projects. The company is also concentrating on 700 MW and higher rating nuclear sets, besides shoring up its capability for higher rating hydro sets and advanced gas turbines to cater to the upcoming market requirements. In the transmission sector, BHEL — a market leader in the 400-kV segment — is taking steps to introduce 765-kV rating transmission and associated equipment.
