Phase I to have parallel taxiway, more airside facilities

Mumbai , Oct. 12

Mumbai airport could become a near look alike of that in Kuala Lumpur or Frankfurt. You can pick up your luggage, walk across a few yards and board the train waiting inside the airport for a ride into the city. Passengers at the Mumbai airport will experience the comfort after it is rebuilt to a master plan prepared by its new owners.

Mumbai International Airport, the company promoted by the GVK-SA consortium and the Airport Authority of India, has submitted the master plan for upgrading the airport to the Government, Mr G.V. Krishna Reddy, Chairman of the company, told newspersons on Thursday.

The rail-link may take a few years, as it will be linked to the Mumbai Metro project, he said. The company was awarded the project in February.

The first phase of the project, to be completed by 2010, includes creation of a new terminal at Sahar catering to domestic and international passengers, a dedicated flyover to link directly the Western Express Highway to the airport and a new cargo handling facility.

Costing Rs 5,200 crore, the first phase, will also have a parallel taxiway, shifting of the air traffic control tower and enhancement of the airside facilities.

In the interim phase, to be completed by 2008, terminal 2B would be refurbished with new airline lounges, retail outlets and duty free shops. Terminal 1A would be upgraded with additional check-in and boarding facilities.
