Festive season accelerates car sales

Helped by increased demand during the festive season, almost all car manufacturers recorded a double-digit growth in sales during October.

Maruti Udyog Ltd reported an 11.10 per cent increase in domestic sales at 55,894 vehicles during October 2006 against 50,308 vehicles in the year-ago period.

Total sales during the month stood at 60,163 vehicles, including 4,269 units of exports, a company release said. Further, it sold 22,294 units of Alto, which the company claims is the highest ever monthly sales for any model and make in the country. The previous record of highest sales is held by Maruti 800 (20,687 units in March 2003), it added.

Hyundai Motor India, meanwhile, sold 26,110 vehicles, comprising 18,603 units in the domestic market and 7,507 units in the overseas market. The domestic sales in October 2006 represented a growth of 18 per cent over October 2005.

General Motors India registered a 12 per cent growth in sales as compared to the same period last year. It sold 3,153 units in October against 2,829 units . The October sales comprise 2,011 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 902 units of Chevrolet Aveo and 240 units of Chevrolet Optra.

Honda Siel Cars India sold a total of 5,566 units. Honda's growth in October this year as compared with the corresponding period last year was 343.5 per cent because the Honda City was in the run-out phase last year, prior to the launch of the City ZX.

Skoda India reported a growth of 7.27 per cent to 1,062 units.
