SIR ROGER PENROSE

Kolkata , Nov. 8

Sir Roger Penrose, the English mathematical physicist who has made a seminal contribution to `General relativity and Cosmology', enthralled the science elite of Kolkata on Tuesday with his public lecture on `Beyond the Big Bang', organised by the British Council Division of the British High Commission.

The lecture, at the small auditorium of Indian Association for Cultivation of Science in South Kolkata, was a part of Second series of World Science Festival and Conferences on the theme `From Quanta to Cosmos - A century after Einstein's Annus Mirabilis'.

Pointing out that he was delighted to deliver the science lecture on November 7, a date which coincided with the 118th birth anniversary of Sir C.V. Raman, the Indian Nobel Laureate for physics, Sir Roger dwelt at length on the intricate space-time geometry of the `Big Crunch', and the String Theory.

Describing space and universe as part of a cosmological mystery, the scientist said the entropy (a measure of the disorganisation or degradation of the universe) will increase in future. He suggested that as much energy goes back into space from earth as it comes from the sun, and that entropy can keep it down.
