Airtel launches Voice SMS

Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 16

Mobile phone service provider Bharti Airtel has announced the launch of Voice SMS in Tamil Nadu.

It is a personalised message service that enables users to send a message in their own voice and in the language of their choice. "This innovative service offers customers the choice to laugh, sing, cheer and express themselves through a SMS," notes a press release from the company. The service works on all handsets.

Announcing the launch, Mr P. Swaminathan, CEO, Mobile Services, Chennai & Tamil Nadu, Bharti Airtel Ltd, said Voice SMS would "complement our SMS service and provide another convenient and easy-to-use messaging option."

To send a message, the Airtel mobile user must dial * followed by the recipient's number (10 digit mobile number), and leave a message with a maximum duration of 30 seconds. The recipient will get a SMS notification — he could then dial in the number mentioned in the message to hear the message.

The service is priced at 75 paise/message. Customers on receiving a Voice SMS can hear it free-of-cost for the first time.
