Going local Tata Motors has sought State help in procuring consumables such as gloves and aprons from the women-run village self-help groups. The State Government has tied up with the Belur Ramakrishna Mission for industrial training to 178 persons from the affected families free of cost.
Kolkata , Nov. 16 The West Bengal Government seems to be approaching a successful completion of the land acquisition for Tata Motors small-car project at Singur near Kolkata. "The acquisition of the entire 895 acres of private land is virtually complete. Each of the landowners has given his consent to acquisition at prices which are much higher than the prevailing rates. We have already disbursed payments for 550 acres and the rest will be completed within this month," the State Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, told media persons.. The project requires a total of 997 acres, including 102 acres of vested land.
Skills training
Further, in order to help the local population to exploit the future job opportunities to be created by the project, the State Government in collaboration with Tata Motors authorities, is on the fast track to impart skills free of cost in the automobile and auto-ancillary sector to the families affected as well as the agricultural labourers in Singur and its adjoining areas. According to the State Government, Tata Motors has also sought State help in procuring consumables such as gloves and aprons from the women-run village self-help groups. Mr Sen said: "We have received a petition from over 150 graduates from the adjacent villages supporting the project and seeking help in getting trained to exploit the foreseeable job opportunity."
Job opportunity
Admitting that there are fears among a section of the agrarian community, he said, "In a competitive economy neither we nor Tata authorities can guarantee jobs in the project. However, the project encourages development of ancillary industry in the adjoining areas to cut costs thereby leading to an opportunity to create large number of jobs," Mr Sen said, adding that they had already received a few proposals in this regard. The State Government has already tied up with the nearby Belur Ramakrishna Mission authorities for industrial training to 178 persons from the affected families free of cost. But that is just the beginning. Tata Motors has decided to train the faculty of a few select ITIs and create necessary training curriculum. The plan is to churn out the necessary human capital while the project is under commissioning. "Tata Motors have already inspected and shortlisted a few such local ITIs which will cater to the need of automobile-led growth in the region," the Minister said.
