The President of India, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Wednesday urged students graduating from the country's oldest business school to imbibe the quality of creative leadership and be partners in the transformation of West Bengal into a developed State.

Delivering the convocation address at the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) here on Wednesday, Mr Kalam described creative leaders as those "whose leadership styles move from commander to coach, manager to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who demands respect to one who facilitates self respect."

Mr Kalam stressed upon the importance of generating entrepreneurs through management programmes. He said the economic progress of some countries, particularly developed ones, was due to a large number of small entrepreneurs employing less than 50 per cent in their establishments. "We need such entrepreneurs in large numbers in our country for transforming our village clusters into sustainable economic units," he said.

According to him, the key characteristics of societal entrepreneurs were desire, drive, discipline and determination. He expressed the hope that the institute would inculcate requisite entrepreneurial traits among its students. He also advised IISWBM to undertake project work under the Rural Development Enterprise Programme for the creation of 19 PURAs (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) in 19 districts of West Bengal.

A total of 205 students of the institute were awarded their degrees and diplomas.
