HAL's air ambulance service scores its first action

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Dec. 7

HAL's newly launched air ambulance service scored its first action by transporting a senior Japanese tourist on Wednesday.

The service, `Vayu Vahan,' was called to airlift Ms Ikeda, 82, from a primary health centre in Badami town in northern Karnataka to Bangalore's Wockhardt Hospital, some 210 km away. The tourist had suffered spinal injuries and become immobilised while travelling from Goa to Hubli, a HAL release said.

Vayu Vahan was called by the Delhi-based Air Charter Service and landed at Bagalkot, the nearest helipad 30 km from Badami. "The operation took 10 hours with 5.30 hours of actual flying and the remaining spent on refuelling and transporting the patient from Badami to Bagalkot," HAL Chief Test Pilot, Wg Cdr (retd) C.D. Upadhyay, said.

The evacuation involved coordination with Jindal Steel Works, the Bagalkot district authorities, International SOS Organisation, Delhi, and an insurance company in Tokyo, the release said.
