Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather `Active' weather conditions return to north, south Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 10 `Active' weather conditions are prevailing in both the southern peninsula and northwest India under the influence of a tropical wave (strong easterly wave) and an extra-tropical wave (western disturbance). In the bargain, a cold wave would be triggered in the north and northwest from Tuesday (December 12) onwards. In the south, the easterly wave has already brought Tamil Nadu under a wet cover.
RAINS TO EXTEND
Scattered to widespread rainfall is seen extending to southern Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala over the next 36 to 48 hours, said Mr J.V. Singh of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). The easterly wave had accentuated briefly to `low-pressure' status for a few hours before hitting the home stretch. On Sunday, associated cloudiness was seen having spread from the coastal belt of Cuddalore-Pondicherry into the north and south of interior Tamil Nadu.
BAY COOLER
The Bay of Bengal waters have cooled with the passage of the wave and prevailing sea surface temperatures may not support another weather-creating system any time soon. The freshly borne Typhoon Utor, currently active in the western Pacific, may, therefore, fail to make any impact. In the north, the prevailing western disturbance will bring scattered rain/snowfall activity over western Himalayan region during the next 36 hours. Isolated rain/thundershowers is also likely to occur over the plains of northwest India.
MERCURY DIPS
Cold wave conditions are prevailing over some parts of southwest Rajasthan with the eastward movement of the present western disturbance. Night temperatures are likely to fall by two to four deg C over northwest India. The arrival phase of a western disturbance brings convective activity to the front and associated cloud formation, leading daytime heating to get trapped. This raises the ambient temperature during the night. Eastward passage of the disturbance clears off the clouds, and lets in cold northwesterlies from the rear.
CHILL TO EXTEND
Cold wave conditions are likely to extend into more parts of northwest India from Tuesday onwards. Lowest night temperature in the plains on Saturday was 5.6 deg C at Sirsa in Haryana.
