Bangalore, Dec. 13

Supervalu Inc, the 130-year-old US grocery chain, is setting up its IT operations in Bangalore as part of its ongoing work to support its strategic initiatives. The company is investing $50 million over five years in Supervalu Services India, said Mr Paul Singer, Chief Information Officer.

"We plan to have a 300-people team in Bangalore over 12-18 months, with skills in Java and other technologies to develop new applications," Mr Singer said.

Supervalu is keen on leveraging skill sets available in Bangalore in areas of retail and business intelligence, he said.

The Bangalore team would be in addition to its existing IT team of over 1,800 associates spread across three locations in the US and a team of some 800 contractors.

Supervalu has been working with vendors in India such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and IBM, and "will continue to work with them despite having a direct presence," he said.

Supervalu expects the first application to be completely developed from its Bangalore centre in the first half of 2007.
