`The Government is in the process of creating essential infrastructure for industrial development of the State.'

Kochi , Dec. 18

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, on Monday called upon management and workers to work together to remove the stigma that most of public sector units are white elephants.

Inaugurating the fourth stage expansion of membrane cell caustic soda plant of Travancore Cochin Chemicals (TCC) at nearby Eloor, the Chief Minister said that TCC, which was on the verge of being categorised as a sick unit, has now improved its financial performance and started making profits.

"If the management and the workers jointly put in efforts, it will scale new heights."

Mr Achuthanandan said that the Government was in the process of creating essential infrastructure for industrial development of the State, besides reviving all the PSUs that are revivable.

TCC EXPANSION

Presiding over the function, Industries Minister Mr Elamaram Kareem said that considering the progress made by the TCC of late, the Government would support the fifth stage expansion of the unit to another 25 tonnes a day.

He called upon TCC Managing Director Dr M.P. Sukumaran Nair to submit a feasibility study report at the earliest for consideration.

The success story of TCC is a clear indication that most sick PSUs could be revived and the Government would initiate action in this direction, the Minister said.

He added that TCC had concluded a long-term wage settlement with the trade unions, involving an additional outgo of about Rs 3 crore a year.

The Government is also favourably considering wage expansion of the officers, he said.

Besides, the Government would regularise 54 casual employees.

He urged the management and the workers to jointly work together to improve productivity and reduce the cost of production in order to make the products competitive in the market.

Mr S. Sarma, Ministry for Fisheries and Registration, launched Ecoclean, the company's sanitation product.
