Railways Logistics - Performance Rlys earns Rs 26,661-cr from freight in first half Sudhanshu Ranade
Chennai , Jan. 7 The Railways raked in Rs 11,332 crore from passengers over the first half of the current fiscal year and Rs 26,661 crore from freight. According to a press release, passenger revenues were generated by charging an average of Rs 27 each from four billion passengers. The number of passengers may have gone up by 8 per cent during this period, compared to 2005-06, and gross earnings by 12 per cent. But revenue per passenger went up only from Rs 26 to Rs 27. Freight earnings this half year were Rs 574 per tonne, even though, according to the Rail Minister's Budget speech, the average tonne travelled was 635 km. "The Tenth Plan targets of 624 million tonne loading and 396 billion tonne kilometres'', he said, "have been surpassed one year in advance''. The Railways nevertheless managed to clock up a profit of Rs 11,350 crore. It could be because capital costs were ignored, and no funds set aside for renovation, safety, modernisation and expansion.
