Mumbai Jan. 30 Microsoft announced the launch of Windows Vista and Microsoft 2007 Office System in India on Tuesday. The launch is simultaneous with the products' introduction in 29 other countries worldwide.

Currently the new version is available in English and Hindi while support for 13 more Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil, Oriya, Assamese and Marathi is expected by early 2008.

"Elegant interface, significantly enhanced security, integrated search and overall improved performance are going to be the highpoints of the Vista," said Ms Neelam Dhawan, Managing Director, Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd.

The operating system (OS) would be 40 per cent faster than the Windows XP, she added

Pricing

Windows Vista loaded PCs in India will retail at a starting price of Rs 22,000, while the pricing for the Microsoft 2007 Office consumer editions starts at Rs 6,000. However, the company declined to specify the actual price of the OS (operating system).

"It is up to our partners to decide the final street price. We don't have a say on it,"said Ms Dhawan. However a Microsoft spokesperson said the Windows Vista Home Basic would cost around Rs 4,000. The company expects to reach about 1.8 crore customers in the next 30 days, said Ms Dhawan.

Windows Vista will be available in four consumer editions - Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows Vista Starter. The Microsoft 2007 Office System will be available in two consumer editions - Office Home & Student 2007 and Office Basic 2007. Equipment manufacturers including HCL, HP, Lenovo, Sahara, Wipro and Zenith have launched a range of Vista compatible PCs, said a statement from Microsoft Corp India.
