New Delhi Feb. 6 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Tuesday sent its recommendations on digitalisation of cable television to the Government.

A TRAI release said that a round table meeting on February 1 had been conducted with various stakeholders to "take the process of digitalisation forward and also to explore the possibility of voluntary implementation of CAS in other parts of the country."

Issues relating to fiscal rationalisation, encouragement of domestic manufacturing, changes in the regulatory regime especially the need for price control, ensuring affordability and choice and exploring alternative models for voluntary CAS were discussed.

A small sub group has been constituted in order to continue discussions relating to digitalisation and voluntary introduction of CAS in the future.

The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi, on Monday said that Government was looking at the availability of set-top boxes, and a need to make them more affordable, particularly with regards to their rentals.

The Government was awaiting TRAI's review of the current implementation of CAS which was introduced in parts of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata at the end of 2006, and has been running in Chennai since 2003, before it rolled out CAS to other parts of the metros and to new cities.
