Coimbatore Feb. 15 The Tamilnadu Agricultural University's (TNAU) Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) has found the five-year price cycle of turmeric, an important cash crop in the region, hitting the trough this year.

It has cautioned the growers to reduce their exposure in the crop by reducing the area under turmeric cultivation during the forthcoming season to check the price fall, as the declining price trend would continue.

The DEMIC, which comes out with period price forecasts for principal food and cash crops, has analysed the price trend in Erode, one of the key markets for the commodity, on the basis of the 22-year price data.

Prices in Erode market kept declining from Rs 2,728 per quintal in 2005 to Rs 2,549 in 2006, and to Rs 2,237 in January this year.

The DEMIC team led by Dr N. Raveendaran, its project coordinator, faced with farmers' queries on the falling prices, has forecasted that they would further go down in the next three months to touch between Rs 1,700 and Rs 2,050 per quintal. The TNAU study quoting the market sources said one of the reasons for the declining prices was the release of old turmeric stocks in bulk by the farmers this year fearing a price slump.
