Coimbatore Feb. 15 The Tamil Nadu Government has proposed to set up three major agricultural terminal markets at Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore each to be established on a 100-acre spread estimated at a cost of Rs 100 crore each.

Disclosing this at the eighth Agricultural Science Congress here on Thursday, the State Rural Industries Minister, Mr Pongalur N. Palanisamy, said creation of these markets would be part of the Rs 2,500-crore integrated agricultural improvement project being chalked out by the State. The proposal has been sent to the Centre for clearance.

The integrated agricultural improvement project may be implemented with the World Bank assistance, the Minister added.

Mr Palanisamy said the State has the potential to further expand the sericulture acreage and it has proposed to step up sericulture from the current 25,000 acres to one-lakh acres.

Under this, it has proposed to extend a subsidy of up to Rs one lakh per acre for the farmers taking up sericulture.
