Chennai Feb. 15 Women have an aptitude for the knowledge industry. They prefer deskwork. The environment of the knowledge industry is more conducive for them. A key requirement of this industry is that one needs to be reasonably good in one's subject and area of study, and women are good at that, so the ITES industry opens up more opportunities to women, Ms Vijayalakshmi Rao, Director and COO, Scope e-knowledge Centre Pvt Ltd, told the students of SDNB Vaishnav College for Women.

Substantiating her claim with statistics, she said while the women-to-men ratio in the IT industry is 21:79, that in the ITES industry is 40:60.

Delivering a lecture on `Opportunities for women in the knowledge service industry', under the BL Club Lecture series, Ms Rao advised the students to do some basic research about the company before joining. "Because, it is where you are going to work for a long time. In case of shifting, think before you leap. Don't go for short-term benefits and look at long-term benefits," she said.

The Principal of the college, Dr T. Sumitra, said Arts & Science colleges have become a threat to Engineering colleges. In the last two years, many corporates visited the college's campus for recruitment. Comparing the curriculum in India with that in China, she said China succeeds because there, the syllabus consists of 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice. "Our educational institutions have to become more industry-oriented," she added.

Others present on the occasion were Ms S. Suganthi, Union Vice-President; Dr Jey Janet Swamidas, Union Vice-President; and Ms S. Madhu, Student President.
