Kolkata Feb. 23 Tata Indicom hopes to have a customer base of one million in the Kolkata Circle by the middle of the current calendar year.

At present, Tata Indicom has a customer base of around 8.5 lakh in the Kolkata Circle, according to Mr Abhijit Pal, COO Kolkata Circle, Tata Teleservices Ltd.

Mr Pal told Business Line here that, among all the telecom service providers in Kolkata, Tata Teleservices had recorded the largest number of incremental additions to its customer base between April 2006 and January 2007.

"We have garnered a 23 per cent share of the aggregate incremental additions recorded by all telecom service providers in Kolkata in the 10 months ended January 31, 2007," he said. While 80 per cent of the company's customer base belongs to the pre-paid category at present, some have lately shown a preference for migration to the post-paid regime in view of attractive post-paid plans offered by the telecom service provider.

Boosting cell sites

According to him, the company is augmenting network infrastructure with a view to catering to the increasing customer base. The number of cell sites in the Kolkata Circle would be augmented from 300 at present to 350 by end-March 2007. Between the time Tata Teleservices launched operations in Kolkata around two years ago and the end of the current fiscal, the cumulative investment made by the company in the Kolkata Circle would be around Rs 500 crore, Mr Pal said.

Meanwhile, the company, on Friday, launched five new handsets for its post-paid customers in Kolkata.

Tata Indicom brand ambassador and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly formally launched the handsets at the company's True Value Hub in Kolkata. The handsets are the Haier D1000, Haier D1200, Haier T1100, Kyocera Topaz and the Indicom Rhythm.
