`HOLISTIC RESTORATION': The water body seen in the picture which literally forms the heart of the city of Kolkata, being in the centre of Dalhousie Square (currently known as BBD Bagh), has been there for centuries, much before Job Charnock set foot on the banks of the Hooghly in 1690. In the distance can be seen St Andrews Church (1818) and behind the palm trees is the concealed majestic facade of Writers' Buildings, which houses the office of the Chief Minister. This area is in for drastic change with the construction of an underground car park between the tank and the secretariat, a tender for which has already been awarded.

Late last month, a meeting of the Kolkata Regeneration Society was called by the Governor of West Bengal, Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, "to frame a holistic restoration and regeneration blueprint" for the Dalhousie Square area.
