Start-up develops social networking site

Accessible through invitation

Hyderabad April 2 Technology start-up Phonelinx Communications Ltd has developed a social networking site, Indyarocks.com, whose services are accessible through invitation only.

Indyarocks.com has been positioned as an online and mobile phone-based site seeking to network Indians and building communities across the globe.

The Founder of PhoneLinx, Mr Kalyan Manyam, told Business Line that the site allows members to build and leverage network of contacts. The message is invite, connect, share and speak out.

With about 160 million-plus mobile phone users in India, the platform is designed to provide the capability to interact with mobile phones. Since the downloads are a concern in India given the Internet speeds, the site has also used new technologies that ensure that when someone is accessing information, the entire page download is not necessary. Mobile phone features will enable users to access the Internet directly from mobile phones.

"Globally, social networking sites have become popular and the likes of myspace and Orkut have big communities of users, be it by helping them interact or store information or also use them for blogging. We want to make this suitable for communities in the country and the Indian diaspora," he said.

Quoting a review by Mashable, a social networking blog, Mr Manyam said Indiarocks may be the Indian myspace.

Apart from using this site to stay connected with friends or family members, communication with others is made enjoyable as one can share photos, videos and blogs. It has unlimited storage space.

"There is no commercial relationship between the members and the site. As we formally launch this in April, we will also announce partners and business strategies," Mr Manyam said.
