Revised direct taxes target likely to be met

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi April 4 The Centre is well on course to achieve the revised direct tax collection target of Rs 2,29,272 crore.

Official sources said that the net direct taxes touched a level of Rs 2,21,458 crore (for challans entered and validated by NSDL up to April 2). This last available data for fiscal 2006-07 under the online tax accounting system does not include the tax deducted at source (TDS) in the last week of March.

The TDS amount is estimated at about Rs 4,500 crore, sources said.

"If one were to add the challans that were not entered (payments made near end March) and the TDS, it would be possible to achieve the revised estimate," sources said.
