New Delhi April 10 A food authority will be appointed within the next four months along with a professional system and experts to implement and monitor food regulatory reforms, said the Union Health Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss.

"The Government is concerned with integration of food laws, which are item specific and dealt by different agencies and therefore we have recently enacted the Food Safety and Standards Act as an integrated food law that will be administered by a single autonomous and scientific regulatory body," said the Minister.

He was addressing the first International Food Regulatory Summit, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Food and Agriculture Organisation in the Capital, on Tuesday.

All packed food from August will require labels specifying nutritional value and trans-fat measures, said Dr Ramadoss. "India like all other developing nations is facing developmental dichotomies where urban population is facing obesity and lifestyle diseases and on the other hand a large segment of the population is suffering from malnutrition," said the Minister.

"There is a tremendous potential of working with the Indian food industry in improving public health by enhancing nutrient delivery to both the segments," he added. The Minister also said that all tobacco products would have to carry pictorial warnings from June 1.
